Only one lake actually contains the word \'lake\' in its name - Bassenthwaite Lake, the others are known as meres, waters or tarns. Lake Windemere is the largest national lake and one of the most popular places for holidays. Buttermere is surrounded by forest and has stunning scenery. Beatrix Potter made her home here and at the gallery at Hawkshead, all her little characters are displayed.
Carlisle is the county town, set in the north west of England, ten miles from the southern Scottish border, and described as the finest Roman city in England.
Hadrian\'s Wall which is 3 metres thick, was built across the north of England. A significant portion of the wall still exists and much of it can be followed on foot or by cycle. It is a most popular tourist attraction and is often known as the Roman Wall. It has been described as the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain.
Carlisle castle is situated near the ruins of Hadrian\'s Wall. The castle is 900 years old and is managed by English Heritage. There is a museum to the Duke of Lancaster\'s Regiment within the castle walls.
Keswick is situated north of Derwent Water and throughout the summer there are theatre productions on the lake side.
Kendal is the home to the Kendal mint cake. It is popular amongst the climbers and mountaineers as a source of energy.
