Campsites in Leicestershire

Leicestershire is in the east midlands and is famous for its grazing lands and hunting. Leicester is the county town and lies on the River Soar. The national Space centre is a major tourist attraction here, and is devoted to space science and astronomy. The Jewry Wall is nearly 2000 years old and believed to be the remaining wall of the public baths of Roman times. The musuem of the same name contains excellent examples of Roman mosaics. Loughborough is the second largest town in Leicestershire. It was first mentioned in 1086 in the Doomsday book. the canal boat festival in Loughborough is an annual event and is centred on the wharf of the Grand Union Canal. It is the largest festival of its kind to be held in the midlands. Melton Mowbray is best known for its pork pie, which became popular among fox hunters in the 19th century. Only pies made within the designated zone around Melton and using uncured pork, are allowed to carry Melton Mowbray on their packaging. Stilton cheese originated near Melton Mowbray and is still made in the town today. It takes its name from the village of Stilton. Melton Carnegie museum documents the history of the town and includes exhibitions on the history of the pork pie and Stilton cheese. Market Harborough is a market town, located in an area which used to be part of a royal hunting forest. The centre of the town is dominated by the steeple of the church of St.Dionysius. Next to the church is the old grammar school, a small timber building, standing on wooden stilts and dating from 1614. Lutterworth is a small town in southern Leicestershire. The town was granted its market charter by King John is 1214 and continues to hold a market to this day. In the days of the stagecoach, it was an important stopping place on the road from Leicester to London, and many former coaching inns remain in the town. The inventor of the jet engine Frank Whittle, developed some of the world\'s first engines, and the UK\'s first jet aeroplane was produced in Lutterworth.
