Campsites in Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries is a market town and a former royal burgh. It is the largest town in southern Scotland. Loch Ken is a freshwater loch used for water ski-ing, fishing and sailing. The lodges around the loch are open to visitors. The first steamboat sailed on Dalswinton loch in 1788 and it is said that Robert Burns was a passenger on the one and only voyage. Robert Burns wrote some of his most memorable work in Dumfries. He wrote Auld Lang Syne here and there are many places to visit which celebrate historical connections with him. Sweetheart abbey is the origin of the word sweetheart. King John was so loved by his wife that when he died, she carried his heart in a casket and often talked to \'dulce cor\' - her sweetheart. Ecclefechan is a small village in the south of the county. The Ecclefechan butter tart is locally produced and is now an alternative to mince pies at Christmas. It is thought the original recipe came from Canada. Gretna Green is a village near the mouth of the river Esk and was the first village in Scotland following the old coaching route from London to Edinburgh. It is famous for runaway weddings. It was the focal tourist point for the marriage trade in the 1700\'s and the old blacksmith shop where the weddings took place is open to the public and visited often. Annan is a town built mainly of red sandstone. In Port street some of the windows remain blocked up to avoid paying the window tax brought in by the Victorians. Lockerbie is 20 miles from the English border. It had international attention in 1988 when the wreckage of a plane crashed there following an in flight bomb explosion. Dryfesdale Lodge visitors centre used to be a cemetery worker\'s cottage. The lodge has exhibition displays depicting Lockabie\'s past and is a memorial to the disaster. Many visitors have come here to reflect, since it opened. Lockerbie house was built in 1814 of old red sandstone. It is thought that Oscar Wilde stayed there at one time. It is situated in 78 acres of woodland and gardens. The house is now owned by an outdoor pursuits company and is a centre for adventure holidays.
