Staffordshire is a landlocked county in the West Midlands. The county is famous for its potteries, breweries and lay at the centre of the canal network in England in the late 18th century. The county town is Stafford. The Ancient High house here is an Elizabethan town house in the main street and is the largest oak framed one of its kind in England. It is now a museum. Shugburgh Hall is a county estate just outside Stafford on the edge of Cannock Chase. The hall has over 80 chimneys. It is owned by the National Trust, but previously belonged to the Earls of Lichfield. JRRTolkien stayed here at the start of the first world war. Stoke-on-Trent is considered to be the home of the pottery industry in England and commonly known as The Potteries. Staffordshire potteries became the centre of the ceramic industry in the 17th century and 100\'s of companies produced decorative ceramic items. The finest collection is the world is on display in the town\'s museums, over 5000 pieces are in the galleries, these explain the history of the pottery industry. Today the city is famous for its aerospace industry. The city is home to the premier league football team, the Wolverhampton Wanderers, founded in 1877. Alton Towers is a major theme park and attracts many visitors a year. It is the most visited theme park in the country. It is based in the grounds of a semi-ruined Gothic country house, which was formerly the home to the Earls of Shrewsbury. Cannock is the largest of three towns in the Cannock Chase district. Cannock Chase is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is made up of woodland, and open heathland. There are a number of visitor centres and museums here.
