Campsites in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire is a county is the East Midlands and home to three professional football teams. The county town is Nottingham, famous for the Royal forest of Sherwood, home to Robin Hood. The forest of today is much smaller than when it was a hunting forest. The forest attracts many tourists and hosts an annual Robin Hood festival every year. The Major Oak, according to folklore was the main hideout for Robin. It is almost 1000 years old, and its huge branches are now supported by an elaborate system of scaffolding. Rufford Abbey, is an estate in Sherwood Forest, owned by English Heritage. Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem claims to be the oldest drinking establishment in England. Its painted sign states it was established in 1189. It takes its name from early crusades to the Holy Land. Southwell minster is an example of early Norman architecture. It has distinctive lead spires, known locally as the \'pepperpots\' and these are the only ones of their kind in the UK. Worksop is a large town on the river Ryton at the edge of Sherwood Forest. It existed before the Norman conquest in 1066 and is mentioned in the Doomsday book. Clumber Park is a country park owned by the National Trust. It boasts the longest double avenue of lime trees in Europe, which extend over 3 miles. Newark stands on the river Trent. Newark castle is located in the town centre. It suffered greatly during the Civil War and only the gatehouse, chapel and tower now remain. The castle gardens are pretty formal gardens that are bordered by the remaining walls of the castle. Retford is a market town with the Chesterfield canal running through the centre. In Market square lies the ornate town hall and in front of this stands the Broad Stone. Legend says the stone had a hollow in it that was filled with vinegar to disinfect coins during the plague. In Cannon square there is a cannon, captured from a Russian ship during the Crimean war. Mansfield is the largest town in the county and lies on the river Maun.
