 Essex is situated in East Anglia and close to London and some seaside resorts. Rural Essex is delightful where it borders Suffolk. Romans settled here and Colchester is the oldest recorded Roman town in England. The county town is Chelmsford. Hylands House and park is a country house and parkland saved from dereliction when purchased by the local council. It is open to the public for various events including an annual music festival. Chelmsford\'s museum is a local history and industrial heritage museum which also incorporates the Essex Regiment museum. The river Can runs through the Central Park.

Southend-on-Sea is known for its seafront and is home to the world\'s longest pleasure pier which was built in 1830, stretching 1.33 miles from the shore. There are various theme parts and the seafront also has a large aquarium.

Colchester has been named one of the fasted growing towns in Britain. As the oldest Roman town, it was for a time the capital of Roman Britain. Colchester Zoo is a charitable organisation, dedicated to assisting conservation projects world wide. Colchester Castle is an example of a largely complete Norman castle. At one and a half times the size of the Tower of London\'s White Tower, Colchester keep is the largest in England. In the late 1880\'s the castle and surrounding park were given to the town and the castle is now a public museum.

Epping Forest is an area of ancient woodland. It is a former Royal forest. In Tudor times it is thought that Henry V111 and Queen Elizabeth 1 hunted in the forest. The Queen\'s hunting Lodge in Chingford, commissioned by Henry is open to the public.

The Queen Elizabeth bridge is an element of the Dartford Tunnel. The huge bridge is the second largest cable-stayed bridge in the United Kingdom.
