Gloucester, on the River Seven, is a city and the county town, and close to the Welsh border. Gloucester cathedral is the burial place of King Edward 11. The cloisters were used in scenes for several of the Harry Potter films. Next to the cathedral is the Beatrix Potter \' house of the tailor of Gloucester\'. Displays of Beatrix Potter\'s life and work is found in the house, which is open to visitors. The city museum has views of the original Roman city walls. Two other museums are found in the docks area.
Cheltenham is a spa town, and many royalty came to drink the waters in years gone by. The River Chelt runs through the town. It is the home to British Steeplechase horse racing and the Gold cup is held here each spring. The Pittville pump room is the largest spa building in Cheltenham. It is now used as a concert hall.
The Forest of Dean is an historical and cultural region in the western part of the county. The Dean heritage centre in Soudley comprises of a museum, art and craft exhibition, waterwheel, workshops and trails around the surrounding woodland.
Cirencester is a market town on the River Churn and is the largest town in the Cotswolds. It is home to the Royal Agriculture College, the oldest college of its kind. A Roman amphitheatre still exists in the town but has only partially been excavated.
