Camping in Cheshire - A List of Cheshire Campsites
Chester is one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans. William the Conqueror ordered the construction of the castle to dominate the city. The Castle overlooks the River Dee. Parts of the castle are used by the Crown Courts and a military museum is a major tourist attraction. Much of the land in Chester is owned by the Duke of Westminster. Grosvenor is the Duke\'s family name and this name features many times in the city.
The city walls go completely around the city for nearly two miles. A footpath runs along the top of the walls crossing roads by bridge like Eastgate. On this bridge is Eastgate clock, which is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
Chester cathedral attracts 1000\'s of visitors each year. The records show there was a church on this site since early in the 10th century. It was formerly the church of St Werburgh and his shrine can be seen in the cathedral. The town hall opened in 1869, along with the cathedral are two of the most prominent buildings in the city.
Roman remains can still be found in the basements of some buildings and on part of the city walls. Roman artifacts are on display in the Roman gardens. Bramall Hall in Stockport is a wonderful example of the \'magpie effect\' Tudor style house . The hall which is used as a museum is open to the public. It is set in 70 acres of landscaped parkland with lakes, woodland and gardens.
