Hereford is a cathedral city and the county town. It lies on the River Wye. The cathedral dates from 1079, and is famous for its Mappa Mundi, the largest Medieval map known to still exist.
Ross-on-Wye is a small market town on the edge of the Forest of Dean. It has been known for its tourist industry for over 300 years. The town is very picturesque with beautiful views of the Black Mountains. Wilton castle was built in Norman times and destroyed during the English Civil War. The ruins of the castle have been restored and are open to the public.
Symonds Yat stands on the River Wye. The name is said to have come from Robert Symonds, a 17th century sheriff and \'yat\' is an old word for a gate or pass. Symonds Yat is a popular location for climbers.
Leominster is the largest town in the county and located on the rivers Lugg and Kenwater. Croft castle is a manor house under the care of the National Trust and some family members still live here. Berrington Hall is a county house and also in the care of the National Trust. It features Capability Brown\'s last landscape design. The gardens and Hall are open to the public.
Ledbury lies east of Hereford and is a thriving market town. The Market House dominates the centre of Ledbury and was built in 1053 by the King\'s carpenter. This lovely black and white building was originally used as a grain store.
Bromyard lies near to the border of Worcestershire. It has a number of black and white timbered buildings some dating back to Norman times. Lower Brockhampton is a moated farmhouse and a National Trust property. It offers many walks with lovely views over the town to the Welsh hills.
