County Durham is in the North East of England. The county town is Durham. Historically its economy was based on coal and iron mining, but it is now a major tourist destination. Durham castle is in the city is from Norman times and the original building was commissioned by William the Conqueror. It is home of the University college, the foundation college of Durham university. The castle stands on top of a hill above the River Wear, opposite Durham cathedral. The cathedral is a huge tourist attraction. Durham university is one of the highest ranked universities in the United Kingdom and has been long thought of as an alternative to Oxford and Cambridge. The university has wonderful botanic gardens set in 25 acres of woodlands. It has plants collected from all over the world and many visitors enjoy the exotic specimens throughout the year. Barnard Castle is a historical town in Teeside. It is named after the castle around which it grew. The castle was founded by the Norman\'s and its remains are now in the care of English Heritage. The Bowes museum has a nationally renowned art collection and attracts many visitors. The Darlington Railway museum covers the railways of the North East of England, with particular emphasis on Darlington. Stephenson\'s Locomotive in 1825 hauled the first train on the Stockton and Darlington railway. the museum has a collection of static scale models and photographs through the ages.
