 Carmarthenshire is in south west Wales. Carmarthen is the county town on river Towy at the mouth of Carmarthen Bay. It was the largest town in Wales before the industrial revolution and claims to be the oldest. At one time it had a population higher than Cardiff. St. Peter\'s church is the largest parish church in Wales and also has the longest nave. The Welsh language is still spoken in most of the region. The Wales national botanic gardens is set in parkland dating back about 400 years. The garden is both a visitor attraction and a centre for botanical research. There is a great glasshouse, the largest of its kind in the world which houses plants from several different Mediterranean climate regions.

Llanelli is the largest town on the west coast of Wales on the mouth of the river Loughor. The Millennium coastal path offers views of the Gower peninsula. It is a pedestrian walkway and cycle path. The Gwili steam railway has a branch line set in the Cambrian hills. The railway is maintained by enthusiasts and includes a museum of signally and railway artefacts. The wool museum in Dre-Fach Felindre is housed in the old Cambrian mills, once the centre of the Welsh woollen industry. The museum tells the story of an industry that produced woollen articles which were sold in local markets and exported all over the world. The museum has working textile machinery. Dylan Thomas lived in the boat house in Laugharne and it was here that he wrote Under Milk Wood. The boat house is set on a cliff overlooking the Taf estuary. It is open to the public for much of the year. There is an exhibition of Dylan Thomas memorabilia and the famous \'writing shed\' where he did most of his work. Kidwelly industrial museum is on the site of the tinplate works which closed in 1941. The museum shows how tinplate for cans and cups was made and there are exhibits too about coal mining. There are many sandy beaches in Carmarthen Bay.
