 Aberdeen has the nickname of \'granite city\' as many of the Victorian buildings are built of granite. The Music hall is a public concert hall and host to the annual International Youth Festival, which attracts over 1000 young people in performing arts and music groups across the world. The Union Terrace gardens is an important landmark in the heart of the city. A bronze statue of Robert Burns stands on the terrace. Balmoral Castle is a large estate house in Royal Deeside. It has been one of the residences of the Royal Family since 1852. The castle is featured on the reverse of the Bank of Scotland\'s £100 note.

Peterhead is the largest town in Aberdeenshire and the eastern most point on the mainland, on the North sea. The town\'s harbour was started by monks in the early 13th century. It is the main tourist attraction and many cruise ships have been berthed here. It is a major fishing port and Europe\'s busiest white-fish port. There are many beautiful beaches along the Buchan coast. Peterhead is known as the \'Blue Toon\'. This was a blue wool that the local fishermen used for making their socks. There is a Blue Toon tartan.

Fraserburgh is a town and the largest shellfish port in Europe and white-fishing is the towns main industry. It also has a busy commercial harbour. It has lovely sandy beaches and is known for being one of the best surfing locations in the UK. Many professional surfers come here to compete.

The museum of Scottish Lighthouses boasts the largest collection of lighthouse equipment in the UK and displays the first lighthouse built on mainland Scotland. The museum contains artefacts covering the lives of the men who guarded the coastline for over 200 years.
