 Montgomery is an historic market town in Powys and has a mixture of timber framed houses and cobbled streets. It is on the Welsh border. The Old Bell museum in the town has permanent exhibitions relating to the medieval and Norman castles in the area. Montgomery was mentioned in the Doomsday book. Offa\'s Dyke is a massive earthworks in Powys. The Offa\'s Dyke has a visitor\'s centre in Knighton between Shropshire and the border and some of the best remains of the earthworks can been seen just a few minutes away from the centre. Offa\'s Dyke has a footpath that passes through many towns, the half way point of the walk is in Knighton. The route crosses the Black mountains and the Shropshire hills. Welshpool is on the river Severn near the border between England and Wales, a bustling market town surrounded by rolling hills. Traditionally it is an agricultural centre and has the largest sheep market in Europe.

Powis castle is a medieval castle near Welshpool. Queen Victoria visited the castle during her tour of Wales in 1832. The property is under the care of the National Trust. The castle and garden is recognised as one of the best preserved in Wales.
Newtown sits on the banks of the river Severn in mid Wales. Robert Owen, the founder of the cooperative movement was born in Newtown. He improved conditions in factories for workers and his statue is in the Robert Owen gardens in the town. The textile museum is housed in a 19th century weaving shop. The exhibitions tell the history of the woollen industry in Newtown and shows the process of wool to yarn. The world\'s first mail order business was formed here and some of the customers included Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria.
Llanidloes is an ancient market town and the first on the river Severn. The Minerva arts centre here is home to an important collection of Welsh heritage quilts.
