A new campsite could be created near Taunton if planning permission is given the green light by local councillors, thisisthewestcountry.co.uk reports.
An application has been submitted to North Petherton Town Council to develop fields to the east of North Petherton Rugby Club into a caravan and camping site that could house in the region of 100 pitches. The development, which would be situated between North Petherton and North Newton was proposed after contractors claimed the area was under-served where accommodation was concerned.
In a supporting document issued alongside the application, Hydrock Consultants claimed that whilst the market for so-called "staycations" is growing in the UK, the local area is underrepresented, an issue which the new campsite could address.
The document, as reprinted by bridgwatermercury.co.uk, read: "The domestic market for camping and caravaning breaks is increasing.
"Many more people in Britain are opting for budget 'staycations'. As a consequence there's a growing need for more caravan and camping sites [but] there are currently very few caravan and camping sites between Bridgwater and Taunton."
It went on to state that a site in this location would provide good accessibility to the major towns of Taunton and Bridgwater, thereby allowing visitors to take in a range of local attractions, including "the Quantock Hills, Exmoor and the Somerset Levels."
