Overlanding Africa

We take a break from our regular scheduled camping news to introduce Mark & Kate and their epic trip through Africa... we'll be hearing a bit more from them over the next few weeks!

After several months of planning (and years of dreaming about it!) we're about to set out on a 11,000 mile round trip from Cape Town, up the east coast of Africa, through Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, up to Tanzania, then back down through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana... epic to say the least!

The mechanically minded among you will straight away be asking what vehicle we're using - although we considered Land Rovers (and that would have been more applicable for a UK campsite site!), we've settled on the king of the (off) road, the Toyota Land Cruiser. Fitted with all the goodies, long range tanks, a water tank, a rooftop tent (handy when camping in unfenced game parks!) and plenty of other bits and bobs we hopefully won't need, but would be stuck if we did need and hadn't packed. We've been super fortunate to have family in Cape Town who've been able to help us out with buying the vehicle and sorting out the paperwork... although if you're thinking of doing a similar trip, most definitely get in touch with Duncan from African Overlanders. In fact, you can rent our exact vehicle from him, without all the paperwork and admin hassle... he is basically like family for any overlanders starting out from Cape Town!

The route we have chosen is based on the time we have and the countries we wanted to visit – it has changed and morphed as we have discussed plans and the route and the things we wanted to see and do. No doubt it will change when we are en-route! Mark had a top three that he wanted to get into a trip, Kate was pretty much along for the ride! Well, the more investigating she did into the countries the more the list of things to see grew but it is fair to say that the driving, the camping and the scenery are what we are looking forward to the most. Unlike Europe there aren’t a vast array of ‘tourist attractions’ it is just about being in Africa and surviving it, we mean soaking it up!

We've used some incredible tools to help us in our planning... shout-outs must go to iOverlander.com, Tracks4Africa and Maggie in Africa, all fantastic planning resources.
