Cornwall lauded in Countryfile's holiday poll

Cornwall has dominated a poll of Britain's favourite holiday destinations, with St Ives fairing particularly well.

BBC's Countryfile Magazine asked its readers to name their favourite British holiday destinations and to send in their answers via post, email and through the publication's official website.

Over 55,000 submissions were cast from nearly 6,000 people in a study which saw Cornwall take the mantle of Britain's favourite destination.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for the magazine attributed Cornwall's success to its "blend of rugged coast, sandy beaches and charming towns and villages - and the half-decent weather."

They added: "Our most southerly county very clearly proved most popular again, beating the Lake District and the Highlands comfortably."

Thisiscornwall.co.uk says the South West region fended off competition from the Lake District and the Highlands to scoop the award, while St Ives was named the country's second favourite market town.

Whitby placed first, the pride of North Yorkshire proving that it's more than a match for the sun, sea and sand offered by towns in Cornwall. Third place was taken by Bridport in Dorset.

All of the results, including the voting for the BBC's rural presenter of the year, can be found at countryfile.com.
