The Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, is a wonderful place for a camping road trip. Most people will begin their tour of the island with a ferry crossing from Oban, on the west coast. The Oban ferry will transport you and your vehicle to Craignure, your first taste of the island. As you make the ferry crossing you will see Duart Castle, which would be a good destination to visit first when you reach the island. Head south west on the A849 and enjoy the rugged, mountainous landscape as you make your way along the peninsula towards Fionnaphort. At Bunessan, you may wish to stop in at the Ross of Mull Historical Centre.
Near Fionnaphort, you will find your suggested camping destination – Fidden Farm. This glorious coastal campsite is definitely one of the best in the Western Isles. Though basic, this campsite offers a lovely beach, with stunning sunset views over the Isle of Iona.
The following day, be sure to take the short ferry ride to Iona, to visit the famous Abbey and Nunnery, before you return to mull to continue on your tour. After a second night's stay at Fidden Farm, you will now get the opportunity to continue your explorations of the island of Mull. Take your time as you slowly make your way back along the Ross of Mull and past the tallest peak on the island, Ben More, up the western coast of the island on the winding, single track road. If you wish you could cross by passenger ferry to the neighbouring island of Ulva, before passing Eas Fors waterfall and continuing on, up to Calgary Bay, where there is basic camping accommodation for the evening.
Stay the night beside the beautiful sands of Calgary Bay before continuing on round the north side of the island to the Mull's main settlement, Tobermory. Tobermory is a charming settlement with brightly coloured houses and a number of attractions. Take some time to explore here before continuing on your adventure.
From Tobermory, you can return to Craignure down the eastern side of the island, or, if you would rather prolong your road trip, you could consider taking the ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan, on the Ardnamurchan pensinsula, another beautiful part of Scotland which is also fantastic for a camping road trip.
While Mull will amply reward a longer stay, to get to know the island better, if you only have a long weekend, Mull could be the perfect camping destination.
