Camping ideal way to get fit for 2012

Camping holidays have been suggested as great ways of keeping fit.

As countless Brits gear up the fitness regimes in accordance with their New Year's resolution to get fit, one expert has claimed that the humble camping trip is a great way of kick-starting a fitness regime in a fun and different way.

Writing for guardian.co.uk, travel journalist Isabel Choat outlined five activities that campers can undertake in the British isles that will banish extra weight gained over the Christmas period.

Whether it's kayaking in the Hebrides, an adventure weekend in the Lakes, fitness camps on the Isle of Wight, walking weekends in Wales or Olympic treks across London, Choat explained that there is something for all everyone .

"Getting fit and healthy doesn't have to mean sweating away in the gym," Choat urged. "Hop off the treadmill and go walking, swimming, running, kayaking or cycling in the UK or abroad."

Choat was not alone in suggesting camping holidays as the ideal way of getting fit, however. Writing for indiatimes.com, Priyanka Luthra suggested that an outdoor holiday package provides a perfect gift; with camping weekends allowing holidaymakers not just to get away from work and their home towns or cities, but also to try their hand at a few different activities.

Campers can undertake "nature walks, cycling, white water rafting, rappelling [abseiling] or trekking," Luthra suggests.
