Rock-pooling is one of the joys of a family seaside trip, and this summer, a camping trip could be the perfect way to introduce your family to this simple pleasure. Who needs to go on an African safari, or a rainforest trek – we have a wide variety of fascinating and unfamiliar creatures right on our doorsteps! Delving into the fascinating ecosystems of our coastal waters is a fantastic way to enjoy the sunshine and make a connection with the natural world around us.
Hook's House Farm, Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire
A gentle twenty minute walk through the village will take you from this sloping site overlooking the bay to the beach, where you will find tidal pools for rock-pooling as well as fossil hunting and other activities. The beach is also the eastern end of the Coast to Coast Walk from St Bees Head.
Shell Island, North Wales
Shell island is not only good for shell collectors. The island has plenty of sand and also some rocky sections where you can enjoy rock-pooling and find a wide range of marine creatures. This large campsite is said to the the largest in Europe, though tucked away amongst the dunes, it is still easy to find the tranquillity you seek.
Wembury Bay, South Devon
Wembury Bay in South Devon is arguably one of the UK's best rock-pooling destinations and the good news is that there are several lovely campsites in the vicinity. Stay at the Pilgrim's rest campsite if you are a caravan and camping club member, or at another nearby site, such as Foxglove Campsite or Brixton Caravan and Camping Park.
Nodes Point, Isle of Wight
Though there are many excellent rock-pooling spots on the Isle of Wight, Nodes Point, at St Helen's Duver, on the north east corner of the island, is said to be one of the best on the island. The area is covered with limestone outcrops whose crevices are crammed with all sorts of fascinating creatures. You can stay at the Nodes Point Holiday Park, Carpenters Farm Camp Site nearby, or at one of the many other campsites on the island.
Fidden Farm Campsite, Isle of Mull, Scotland
There are plenty of breathtaking camping locations along the west coast of Scotland on on the Western Isles that offer unbeaten access to the beautiful and fascinating coastlines. Fidden Farm is right on the water's edge, and between the soft, white sands are plenty of rock-pooling that are perfect for 'guddling' and for study of marine creatures.
