'Bradley Wiggins effect' expected to boost Surrey tourism

Campsites in Surrey could get a boost from cyclists wishing to emulate the success of British time trial gold medallist Bradley Wiggins.

According to bbc.co.uk, hotels and tourist organisations in Surrey are reporting an increase in bookings from cyclists keen to follow the Olympian's winning route around the county, with some dubbing the phenomena - the "Wiggin's effect".

During the opening weekend of the Olympics, thousands stood to watch Wiggins - who is now the most decorated British athlete and most successful Olympic cyclist of all-time - pass through west London's Hampton Court, around Box Hill, and back again.

Over the weekend however, Surrey Police issued safety warnings to cyclists after one man was injured in Copthorne and sent to East Surrey Hospital with leg injuries, as hundreds more riders took to the roads, writes crawleyobserver.co.uk.

Messages from the police, posted on its twitter feed, included: 'Great to see people enjoying the Olympic road race route yesterday. Remember - Bradley had closed roads, so take it easy!' and 'Planning a nice drive in the Surrey Hills? There will be more cyclists than usual out there (the #WigginsEffect) so expect them!'

Wiggins has previously urged that cyclists take care on the roads and wear helmets, following a fatal incident at the Olympic Park.
