Reviews of Byecross Farm

I arrived on the 8th of August with my 10 year old son after recommendations from a friend who had stayed in the past. I am a novice when it comes to camping and didn't really know what to expect.
It was fairly busy when we arrived and I wasn't sure where to pitch up, then I met Billy (the fish), "resident" fisherman on the site, he showed us a great pitch next to his caravan under the shade of the trees next to the river.
We had a five night stay, we loved the freedom, camp fires, barbies, canoeing, sitting under the stars and making many friends along the way.
Beautiful setting, will definately visit again, hope Billy will be there when we do.

Just back from a wonderful weekend at Byecross Farm. We camped with a big group of our friends and were welcomed by the owners, who had sectioned off our own area for us. On the Saturday night the owners did a BBQ for us with good quality meat and plenty of salad, chips and bread. The shop stocked the essentials needed once we had run out and it was great that the option was there to have breakfast cooked by them too.
The only comments I would mention would be that the washing up area should have a canopy, luckily we didn't have much rain but if you did, you'd be washing up in the elements. The showers really needed to have somewhere to put your clothes (a secluded changing area)as door to toilet block is left open and you are very much on display. Soap in the toilets would be good and a dryer as it's not something you carry round with you. However, these are minor details that could easily be rectified.
Super, beautiful place. Would recommend the on site canoe hire too.

What we liked: the setting, trees in the orchard, facilities were good. Clean flushing toilets with toilet roll. Actual stainless steel sinks with hot water from a tap. Best of all, by the river with a canoe school ran by a rather lovely Sam.
Things we didn't like, noisy campers, slamming Car/van doors. Pitches were quite close together, the bar was a bit cliquey.

Only just discovered this campsite, what a little gem. There is everything you need(including cider and firewood!!!)and a really relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in the yurt which is tucked away in a great little spot but not isolated from the rest of the site. Well equipped and the futon was amazingly comfortable. Tony, Sharon and Ollie are fab, they make everyone so welcome and are really friendly and helpful. Cant wait to be back. Thanks

Byecross farm is the best campsite I have ever stayed at. Stunning location on the banks of the River Wye - really great for canoeing!! ( Tony and Sharon, the owners, are exceptionally helpful and friendly and will do their best to keep you happy. I have been staying at Byecross for about 15 years and each year there are improvements - loos and hot showers - yeahh!! This is a campsite for people who like peace and quiet and natural surroundings, campfires, caneoing and kayaking....

Couldn`t ask for a better campsite in my opinion.
Facilities great (looked brand new)and friendly owners also.
Stayed 1 night during a canoe trip August 2013 and was by far the best in the trip. If you every get a chance book a BBQ during your stay (with a cold beer or two). Hoping to repeat last years trip and stay here again.

For the last 15 years I have organised a weekend canoeing trip on the Wye for family and friends. It gets bigger and more popular each year and has evolved to meet the needs of the regular participants. We usually move sites at least once and have only ever used Byecross for one night but this year, by popular demand we settled at Byecross Farm as a base for three nights over May Day Bank Holiday Weekend.
The Orchard was full of pink blossom, the toilet block and washing up facilities were great, a fire makes camping special and the new steps and canoe rollers make the river more accessible.
Byecross Farm is without doubt our favourite camp site and we look forward to visiting again soon.

This is a favourite site of our children and grandchildren. The campfires, the river, the relaxed atmosphere and the great attitude of Tony and Sharon, the owners. We love our trips to Byecross.

Have just returned from a lovely stay at Byecross, in spite of the rain. Was busy over bank holiday weekend, but facilities coped and we never had to queue for showers. Toilets and showers kept clean throughout stay. Really lovely spot in gorgeous countryside. Dads and kids hired canoes at Black Mountain and had fab few hours on the river. Lovely to camp in the Orchard, and despite being full it didn't feel it once settled in. If you like chilled out camping round a fire, this site is great.

Second year at this site for our annual dads and kids camp and canoe trip. This is a first class camp site. The owners seem to understand what fun is about and are very laid back. Camp fires allowed, fun allowed, canoes to rent, no 'noise bond!'. Services got better this year with new shower block and reasonable £1 charge. I strongly recommend the site!

We stayed at Byecross on the way down to Hereford for a 2 day paddle before the weather got too cold to camp. It's a great place just above Monnington Falls, we were able to buy a few bags of firewood and turned out we just slept by the fire. I would definitely recommend it.

As a group of both adults and children we found Byecross Farm to be perfect for our weekend camping needs. The site had been recommended to us and completely lived up to expectations. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful, the site itself was in a stunning location, the facilities were spotless, there was a pub close by and it was a real treat to be able to sit around a camp fire. All of us had a wonderful time and we would happily recommend Byecross to anyone...Camp sites such as this are few and far between.

I loved this site. Pitched amongst the apple trees and camped in the dappled sunlight during the day, next to the roaring fire come nightfall. bags of privacy, good facilities (new shower/toilet block) and the local pub a mere 15 mins walk away. perfect for kids. Owners couldn't have been more helpful.

Great place.
Catherine Whyte (7th Oct 2012)
Site was exactly as described. In an orchard on a farm in the countryside. Toilets, basins and hot showers (£1 for 5mins) are clean and in good condition.

Owners were excellent, very helpful and informative.

Stayed for two nights and despite the cold weather and drizzle had a great time. The policy of allowing camp fires definitely helped to keep us warm and comfortable!

Although we didn't canoe or kayak, the river is only yards away and can be accessed easily enough down the bank. There were others staying here and canoeing in the daytime who seemed to manage it no problems.

Lovely place to stay for a weekend.

Byecross Farm was recommended to us by a close friend who had visited the site twice before. He gave it rave reviews and, having now been and stayed there for a weekend, I can totally appreciate why.
The site is set in beautiful surroundings. Seldom do you have the chance to set up camp in such an old apple orchard, to be able to enjoy a camp fire (disappointingly rare in the UK), to be next to a stunning river and have access to spotless amenities. We felt very fortunate to be able to do all these things and without a doubt our entire group, adults and children alike, loved our stay.
We would all highly recommend Byecross Farm to anyone who enjoys camping and is looking for relaxation and fun.

Wow, I think we have found the perfect campsite!
On arrival drove onto the site and found a pitch that was big enough for our tent, lovely views of the river, and open fire already made! Our group was 15 strong which included 8 children. The pitches are set within an apple orchard, ours had a view of the river and also the cows and sheep in the next field which the children loved. The owners could not have been more helpful, even asking if we needed any provisions as they were going to the local village shop. Firewood is supplied on the site and at £3 per bag a bargain. The owners also offered the use of canoes but as the river was very high due to all the rain we declined, but next time it is a must!
The campsite had several other guests, although we wouldn't have known as our pitches were secluded which made the stay even better.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this site to anyone who wants a quiet time away in an idyllic location, also kid friendly. The new shower block was immaculate at all times of the day.

We will be back soon.

Having recently spent some time on this site I feel that I owe it to others considering a stay at this location to write a review myself, which - I'm sad to say - is at odds with all of the others here.

I spent 2 nights on Byecross Farm camp site.....having chosen mainly due to 100% positive reviews you see posted here.

My partner and I are a young couple who were looking to get away from the city for a romantic few days camping in peace and quiet with nice surroundings, ideally on the river with scenery to boot, and this seemed the ideal location.

I called a couple of days before arriving to enquire as to the availability of pitches on the site, and was assured wholeheartedly by the owner that the place would be empty save for a small group on a canoe party, and that there would possibly be “a few” other people arriving over the weekend.

On arrival the first noticable thing was that the place looked rather unkempt and overgrown, and upon driving through the first orchard into the second was informed by another camper that the “small group” mentioned on the telephone was in fact a 80 to 100-strong group coming down for a birthday party over the weekend and that the second orchard was privately booked to them.

So much for peace and quiet.

We then searched for a decent pitch with a view of the river – which itself lies about 20 feet below the campsite level and is not easily accessed from the site other than down a metal staircase onto a large mudflat/canoe launch area (“shallow and easy for kids and dogs to play in...I think not?!?!) – then in the one remaining available orchard there were by my count only 2 spots from which one could actually SEE the river

The second day came, and brought with it a large group of 15 – 20 young lads and their music system. Cue several hours of loud booming music which appeared to go unnoticed and hence unchallenged by the owners despite their house being no more than 30 metres from this noise. This continued into the early hours.

We left the next day having totally wasted 2 days of a planned week long break – due to the misleading reviews and false assurances of peace and quiet. Not to mention the costs involved having driven 2 hours to get there.

So, this site is absolutely ideal if you want a party with no view or easy access to the river, in an overgrown orchard. There are also no views of the mountains which I recall were displayed on this review site until a few days ago......

I would advise against visiting Byecross Farm if you want a quiet break few days – it seems you are unlikely to be able to be sure of getting it.
Ben O'Malley (1st Oct 2012)
Recently visited this site, Quite a nice LITTLE site but dissapointed there were NO VIEWS!! There were two almost all night parties going on, one with 80 people and one all male party of at least twenty. It is good in the fact that anything goes at this site, and if you are young and after a party site then this is for you. Really NOT ideal for families or couples looking for a romantic hol. All the reviews that state it is a quiet site??? Was not our experience at all!! The owner openly said they have regular stag do's and hen parties. And same sex groups welcome! So ideal for that sort of wknd. Great that you can have camp fires, just a shame there has been that many fires that it has wrecked the grass and there is not much of it left. So if you are looking for a very small campsite, with NO VIEWS, and a party rave feel, Bycross farm is for you! Enjoy and visit at your own risk!!!

This was a wonderful campsite with very welcoming owners who could not do more to make us feel welcome, we pitched up with a couple of friends and made home for the weekend. There was a lovely pub, the yew tree inn within a mile. We bought wood to have an open fire, whilst we supped our beers and cider. We'll definitely be back. But was sad to here that the couple camped next to us the first night chose to complain about noise......which was only made by them! And left without paying!..... Sad to hear there are still some freeloaders who can't appreciate beautiful surroundings and at £5 each, is a real bargain.

This place is an absolute must for camping fans. A family run site and the owners are always very friendly and welcoming. I've only been camping twice and both times at byecross farm, not sure anywhere else would stand up. Set in idyllic grounds and right on the river it's peaceful and quiet. Being able to have a camp fire is the best bit as its what camping is all about and many places don't allow fires, not here as they even supply the wood, bonus!!!!
Looking forward to going back again soon

What a gem this place is ! Stunning location very friendly owners who clearly care about the environment , the new toilet/shower block is great clean and tidy I went in a group we had a open fire with views over the river, this was my first time camping in thirty years and I know I will go back fantastic place to chill

Lovely little gem of a place. Had an ideal spot with tree shelter and a view of the river Wye. We had a campfire going all night. Toilets and shower facilities are very clean. Fresh water hot & cold. Friendly owners who sell firewood, hire canoes and sell alcohol. Who could ask for more? Only an hour and a half drive from home, Can't wait to go back already!
Nat & Adam (1st Jul 2012)
Great Campsite set along the river wye set in an old apple orchard is a great place to camp in a tent or camper van but i maybe wouldn't recommend a caravan just because of the low branches. It was a great week of relaxation its just a shame the weather wasn't better for us but we had the odd nice day sitting around the campfire. The facilities are new and very clean with two sowers in the women's side and two in the men's side costing £1 for 5 min's of hot water and they are big enough to get 2 kids in each!. It doesnt sound long but the 5 min's was plenty long enough for a shower so don't be put off by this. The only problems i could say with this site is the river bank is very steep and you would have to keep the kids off this, and the local shops are too far to walk and requires a drive but the local pub is within walking distance if you turn left out from the site entrance and follow the road round for about 15mins.

We will be returning one day and hopefully Billy the Fish (resident fisherman) will be there again!!

Myself and 3 friends camped here after a 19 mile canoe trip down from Hay on the June bank holiday weekend. The 4 of us are all pretty keen campers, and I can honestly say, that this is the best campsite we have ever stayed at. Lovely surroundings, right on the river, beautiful scenery and orchard in the campsite. Totally unspoilt in any way. Lots of space to camp, and can pitch anywhere. Really nice vibe to the campsite, and the owners were really kind (I also called in advance to turning up, and the owners even pointed me towards a canoe hire called paddles & pedals, which was also really good). Such great value for £5 per person, and only £3 for firewood is also a great deal (I would recommend buying 2 bags per night, this lasted perfectly for us for 1 night). The firewood was also really good quality, dry wood and easy to get going without the aid of firelighters! Owners also let you do the fire on the ground which is a real novelty. Facilities are really nice, great new shower/toilet block/washing up facilities. Also a really nice atmosphere in the evening, with lots of families and friends enjoying themselves in the evening around a campfire! So nice to be in a campsite like this, and the owners had such a relaxed approach to camping that it is literally impossible not to enjoy yourself. It is everything that a campsite site should be, and there is no way that I could fault it at all. We will definitely be back soon. This review might seem a bit complimentary, but Byecross really is that good! Its so hard to find campsites that tick all the boxes like this one, so really glad to have found it!
Tom (12th Jun 2012)
Can't believe this fantastic little site has escaped us for so long! We met up with some friends here (four campervans in total) and easily found a secluded corner. The whole feel of this site is relaxed and friendly, it's exactly what we look for. Simple, honest riverside camping, a million miles away from the world of oversized, rulebook brandishing McCampsites that hog so many beautyspots.
Brilliant, thanks Tony & family. See you again soon!

Mark B (21st May 2012)
A delightful campsite, not really set up for caravans due to the low hanging branches of the orchard although there are a few pitches that are not under the trees.

With an extended awning pole the branches were lifted out of the way so that we could reverse in and set up camp with a great view of the river.

Approach the site from Bredwardine if towing for the easiest access onto the site. The site itself has a washing up area and plenty of hot water. I didn't try the shower but by the look of it there should be no complaints. We also noticed that there was construction under way which could be for a bigger and better toilet and shower facility.

We both agreed that this is a great site. The neighbours were friendly and considerate as were our hosts who made us especially welcome.

We will return again soon as it is only 20 minutes from home and I would like to get some photo's of the kingfisher that flew by within 20 minutes of us turning up.

All in all this site is well worth a visit but don't tell too many people about it or you may find it hard to get in.

Julian Nicklin (26th Sep 2011)
This campsite is well worth a visit. Although it could be really busy, it always had a nice warm atmosphere, with campfires, singing etc. Although there were not a lot of facilities, we enjoyed it very much.I would love to come and stay again.
nelly schokker (18th Sep 2011)
Really lovely site, very relaxed and informal, brilliant location for canoeing. Couple who run the site really nice, came round every evening to make sure everything OK. Campsite was beautiful in the evening with all the campfires going and people sitting round enjoying themselves. Will definately be back in not to distant future.
Caroline Byrne (8th Sep 2011)
Just back from Aug Bank hol weekend and although it was extremely busy the couple who own it (Tony and Sharon) couldn't be more obliging and helpful, always on hand. They very kindly kept a birthday cake in their fridge for two days for us. One of our party had forgotten roof box keys so Tony got tools to help him open it.Bent over backwards to be helpful. The site itself is magnificent. A large apple orchard with sun streaming through the branches and a river running right through the site, much of it shallow and flat so ideal for kids and dogs to play in. Campfires were set up everywhere and you can buy logs onsite or being own. Can't praise this site enough. Hereford only 20 mins up road but dont really need to leave site if you have all of your supplies. They had put extra toilets on in the shape of portaloos but a new toilet block is in progress which will be needed once word gets around about the amazing beauty spot. Well done and keep up the hard work!
Sally (30th Aug 2011)
This is a great site! We had a very relaxed weekend and the owners are very laidback and friendly.Thankyou for a great weekend, we will be back soon
Jon (16th Aug 2011)
A beautiful site set in an apple orchard on the river wye, accomodating, unfussy hosts and allowance of a campfire to boot. Couldn't have asked for more. Highly recommended!
Matt (1st Aug 2011)
I have stayed at this campsite a couple of times now whilst taking youth groups canoeing down the Wye and due to use it again shortly. My groups have been able to tent amdist a lovely orchard, light a nice campfire, use good toilet/washing facilities and allll this is done in just the most lovely serene location. A small intimate campsite that is just great for small groups or friends. Lovely owners too...David Howells (C/O Adventure Beyond).
David Howells (24th Jul 2011)

Fantastic campsite in a fantastic rural location. A group of friends and myself have stayed here on a few occasions now and i honestly cannot find a bad word to say about it. With the relaxed atmosphere and great facilities, guaranteed everyone will be kept happy (even a group of fussy teenage girls!)

Nothing is too much trouble for Sharon and Tony, they couldn't be more helpful.

Can't wait until my next visit!
Jessica Price (8th Jun 2011)
Wow, a little piece of heaven, not far from home.
Well worth a visit, site is just right, all very natural with just the right amount of mod cons, a true camper needs. Although site is only 10 miles from our home, we felt we had escaped to an idylic piece of Britain. Kids loved the relaxing atmosphere, climbing trees, canoeing etc.
They dont come better than this.
Tony and Sharon are more than accomodating and extremely helpful, nothing is too much trouble!
Nikki Addis (8th Jun 2011)
Possibly the BEST EVER new years eve!!!
We contacted the owners a very short time before new year to ask if a group of us could go along for a camping trip to celebrate new year without the hustle and bustle of the city center. They were very welcoming and had no problem accomidating us at short notice that time of year.

We pitched up, light a big fire and danced around it all night long seeing in the new year with a couple of fireworks.

The shower and toilets facility were clean and tidy and in good working order.

It is set in a lovely orchard with the river wye running staright past and there is a small village pub a short distance away.

We had sooooo much fun new year that we all went back about a month ago (April 11) once again this rural campsite and its owners exceeded out expectations and their hospitality is second to none.

Thank you. WE WILL BE BACK :)
Oli Cullum (7th Jun 2011)
We pulled up in the camper van, popped up the roof, made the beds, lit a fire and just sat back and relaxed with a bottle of wine. This wasn't our first visit, we love the laid back atmosphere and the freedom that the site allows the 3 kids. We hired a canoe from Tony and had a fabulous day on the river. The toilets and shower were well maintained and very clean and I was very impressed with the new stainless steel washing up area. Fantastic, we can't wait to return in July.
Rob Corrick (7th Jun 2011)
What an idyllic little site this is - set in lush grass in the apple orchard on Byecross Farm. The river Wye runs alongside the orchard making it really popular with kayak/canoe enthusiasts. There was a really friendly atmosphere, lots of people having fun on the water.

But it's a very small site and was way too busy this bank holiday weekend to feel comfortable especially as the facilities are 2 toilets and 1 shower. The lovely owners were hugely apologetic and said they weren't really prepared for being so busy as they don't take bookings and would put in extra facilities for busy weekends in future.

The site is very low key and laid back but be warned there are NO signs on the surrounding roads and a very small one on the gate which we would have driven straight past if we hadn't spotted the tents! We also had no phone reception which caused a few problems.

We had a great stay, late nights around the campfire, kids climbing trees and wading in the river! Overall a lovely old fashioned campsite in a lovely bit of the country!
Hannah Moore (6th Jun 2011)
Response from Byecross Farm
Yes you are right there Hannah, the two toilets and one shower were no where near enough on that weekend but I have spoken to the planning dept in Hereford today and they said to submit a planning application to build more. If successful I will have them up and running by next year. Please come back.
