The Gower Peninsular was the first place in the UK to be labelled an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. Offering miles of spectacular sandy beaches and enchanting woodland, the peninsular is a geological wonderland packed with incredible sights and activities.
There are many beaches to enjoy around the coast meaning that even in the heights of the summer there’s plenty of space to set up camp and construct a sandcastle or two. The award-winning Rhossili bay, with its long sandy expanse of beach punctuated by the famous Worm’s Head, is understandably the most photographed part of the Gower. This beautiful spot has maintained its stunning natural beauty despite becoming a firm favourite for both families and adventure seekers with its great surf and good facilities. Llangennith Sands, at the northern part of the bay is the most popular surf spot in Wales, with good swell at all stages of the tide however there are a number of other great breaks around the peninsular including Oxwich, Caswell and Langland. The Gower is also a very popular location for windsurfing with some beaches suitable for beginners and other more challenging spots for those with more experience.
It’s not only the watersports that make the Gower stand out - the area is also a big draw for rock climbers with excellent traditional and sport climbing routes as well as bouldering problems to tackle.
There are some beautiful cycle routes around the peninsular, suitable for a range of riders, all offering breathtaking views of the coast and countryside. Experienced riders can enjoy more challenging routes and expect to take on some tough ascents.
By far the best way to experience the Gower is to don your walking boots, step out of the tent and head off on your own adventure. With countless footpaths and walking routes covering the peninsular, there is no better way to discover the beauty, history and geology of the Gower. With such diverse range of landscapes, wildlife spotters are bound to be treated to some fantastic sightings, from rare birds to land mammals both large and small.
