This charming seaside town, perched at the Western tip of Carmarthen Bay, has long been luring holidaymakers to it’s shores, and it’s certainly not hard to see why. Surrounded by beautiful beaches with breathtaking views, cobbled streets lined with cafes, pubs and restaurants and a seemingly endless selection of activities on offer - Tenby has it all.
The town itself still contains many reminders of it’s long and varied history. Fortified by The Normans in the 13th Century, the walls that once surrounded the town still stand in many places. The Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is the perfect place to learn more about the significant role that Tenby has played throughout Welsh history with plenty of interactive exhibits and activities for all ages. Just across from the museum, the sole remaining tower of Tenby Castle can be found standing proud atop Castle hill, overlooking the harbour. From here you can also access Tenby’s new Lifeboat station which sits just along the cliff from it’s older counterpart. The station continues to hold an important position within the town and is open to the public during the summer for visitors to come and see the Lifeboats up close.
When it comes to activities, Tenby has plenty to offer. Golf fanatics should head to Tenby Golf Club or Trefloyne Manor for a round of 18 in two stunning Pembrokeshire locations. Those looking to get out onto the ocean can hop on one of the regular fishing trips departing from the harbour or perhaps hire a kayak for an adventure of your own. There are a number of companies offering surf hire and tuition as well as water skiing, banana boating, coasteering and jet ski safaris.
Around the town, there are plenty of beaches to choose from with lots of opportunity for swimming, sand castle building and relaxing. Harbour beach, Castle beach and North beach are all popular favourites with good facilities and easy access from the town. There are regular boat trips from the harbour over to Caldey Island. Currently owned by the Cistercian Order of monks, this incredibly picturesque island has historically been inhabited by various orders of monks and visitors are welcome to attend daily services. A walk to the lighthouse on the far side of the island is rewarded with panoramic views of the Pembrokeshire coast, the Gower Peninsula and Lundy Island. Be sure to stock up on island-made perfumes, chocolates and shortbread before you head back to the mainland!
