Nestled on the Jurassic coast where Dorset meets Devon, with glorious cliffs and beaches stretching out in each direction, sits the beautiful town of Lyme Regis. This historic fishing town is bursting with charm, beauty and fun with plenty to see and do no matter how long your stay.
The iconic Cobb harbour wall, originally constructed in the 13th century to protect the town and fishing port, provided a safe haven for weary sea travellers and merchants. Today it stands as an impressive landmark, famous for its dramatic and photogenic location. The Cobb serves as a base for regular fishing and boat trips out into Lyme Bay and is home to the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium. Those who venture out to the end of the wall (in good weather!) will be rewarded with panoramic views along the marvellous Jurassic Coast to Charmouth, West Bay, Golden Cap and Chesil Beach.
Situated in the south west corner the Dorset coast, a recognised World Heritage Site, Lyme Regis has a number of beach options within walking distance of the town and even more possibilities just a short drive along the coast. The Town beach is a popular choice for swimmers and families with both sand and pebbled sections, RNLI lifeguards throughout the peak summer months and good facilities. Those interested in hunting for fossils should head to Monmouth beach, a pebbled beach famous for its limestone layer known as the Ammonite graveyard. For a more in depth experience, join a fossil walk organised by the Lyme Regis Museum and have a look around their interactive fossil gallery.
It goes without saying that Lyme Regis and the areas surrounding it provide a stunning setting to get out walking. With the Southwest Coast Path on its doorstep, the town is a perfect starting point for walks along the World famous coastline as well as more local routes through the old town and along the river Lym. Venture east and climb to the summit of Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over Lyme Bay and as far as Dartmoor on a clear day.
