As you might expect from a coastal town in North Devon, Ilfracombe and the surround area boast a spectacular string of award-winning beaches, golden sands, stunning cliffs and breathtaking views. Heavily influenced by the Victorian era due to the arrival of a railway in 1874, the architecture of the town still retains much of the the charm of this period.
Ilfracombe remains an important fishing port in Devon, which means there are plenty of fresh seafood options around the town - great news for fish fanatics! Try some of the restaurants lining the harbour or along Fore Street for some delicious seasonal and locally sourced produce.
The award-winning Ilfracombe Aquarium specialises in local sealife, revealing some of the fascinating species that make their home along the Northern coast of Devon. You can discover some local wildlife for yourself too should you head to Hele Bay or The Tunnels where there are endless rockpool adventures to be had. Opened in 1820, The Tunnels beaches offer a completely unique day out for all the family. A handcrafted network of tunnels, offer access to a number of sheltered beaches and victorian bathing pools. Originally designed to provide segregated swimming locations for men and women, The Tunnels turned the fishing town of Ilfracombe into a popular seaside resort, attracting holidaymakers from all over the South.
Nowadays visitors flock to the area not only for its stunning coastal location and proximity to Exmoor National Park, but for the huge array of outdoor activities on offer. There are some excellent surfing beaches within a 30 minute drive of Ilfracombe, notably Woolacombe, Croyde bay and Saunton Sands. A number of outdoor activity centres are based in and around the town offering full and half day experiences including; kayaking, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, fishing and coasteering. Or why not hire a bike and head off on your own adventure into Exmoor or along the coast. Equally, the South West coast path can be found snaking its way through the town and out either side offering some tantalisingly good walking and stunning views which will be hard to resist!
