Reviews of The Secret Campsite
If you want tent camping with real fires and spacious pitches, this is the place for you!
We spent the early May Bank Holiday at the Secret Campsite for the first time and came away mightily impressed. Our pitch was enormous (as were the others), meaning lots of privacy. There was virtually no road noise as the nearest main road is a fair distance away. With no cars on site, there was even less noise (and plenty of barrows to move gear from car to pitch). This left us to the glorious sounds of nature, peace and tranquility.
The general vibe of the place was really friendly and relaxed, and the owner Tim with his staff were always on hand and helpful.
The price of wood was a bit steep, however this price is shown on the website.
Can’t wait to camp here again.

A wonderful campsite! I stayed 3 nights and it was lovely! Great hosts, large pitches and clean facilities. The nearby woodland is beautiful in spring. There is a lot to see! I'll be back. Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful stay at the Secret Campsite (weekend 19/20 Sept 2015) and really appreciate the generous hospitality of our host Tim. Our group thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, the kids had an absolute ball and our pitch (Elder I think) was lovely and secluded meaning we felt a little more comfy with our slightly rowdy kids in amongst our disorganisation of the Friday evening! The pub recommendation was great - The Great Oak - our children aged 3, 4 and 6 managed the mile and a half down the train track, although we were all somewhat weary on the way back!
The facilities were clean with a good shower and plenty of toilets which were also kept clean, no manky wet floors. Washing up facilities were good, with plenty to read while doing so. We managed to strike up a few good conversations with other campers at the washing up facilities, which was a lovely alternative to the straight faces of London. There was also a fridge on site with plenty of space. The site was well kept and I love how they were all mowed yet the surroundings were kept slightly longer.
Great campsite, very friendly owner, nice and quiet, beautiful surroundings! We will stay here again for sure.
This is our second visit. It's so lovely and peaceful. There is so much space between the pitches here that it has probably spoiled any other campsite for me! I felt our children were completely safe wondering around on their own. Great to have the choice between compost and traditional toilets for those less brave. We'll be back again.
Myself and a friend, along with her 9 year old daughter camped here back in May in the Tree House tent and I must say we had a fabulous time.
The Tree Tent was large enough for us all and very comfortable to sleep in with the temperature working well for that time of year.
We loved the way the areas were separated off just enough with the long grass to make you feel like you had your own space, without making you feel isolated, the outdoor furniture being a lovely additional touch.
We loved being so close to the woods and made the most of the great nature walks you can take, seeing the deer at night really made the trip, alongside all the other birds and nature you never to get to see as Londoners.
We especially liked the Secret Teapot and took advantage of the great hot chocolates provided!
Tim and his family have set up something special here and we are looking forward to coming again in 2015 with the rest of the family to stay in the amazing Gridshell.
We had a lovely 2 night stay in the secret campsite. Owners (and guests) were super friendly, showers, toilets all great, and they provided a fridge and washing up liquid and sponges! Best of all the pitches are far apart so we didn't hear the other tents at all- no zip noise, talking or anything else at all- and each pitch has it's own fire put where you can light real fires with wood they sell there. Perfect!
I have just returned from the most wonderful stay in the Gridshell at the Secret Campsite with my grandchildren. I have stayed in numerous camp sites throughout the UK and this is by far the best. The pitches are really large and very private due to the long grass etc around the edges of each pitch. Every pitch has it's own fire pit and ours has two hand constructed wooden seats to relax in around the fire. The facilities are basic but very clean and adequate for the number of pitches on the site. There is wildlife everywhere and my grandchildren loved netting the butterflies to identify and then setting them free again. There is an amazing wood bordering the camp site which is a delight to wander through. Our pitch got very hot during the day and there is not much shade yet, but this will be better when the carefully planted trees around the pitch have grown, so take an umbrella with you. The owner Tim could not have been more helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We spent a great day on the river at Barcombe which is just down the road. A brilliant time was had by all.
A Must Stay!
We have stayed at this campsite 3 times since it first opened and fell in love with it straight away. It's camping at its best, how it should be done. Large open pitches separated by long grassses, shrubs and trees with a fire pit for log fires and bbqs. All in a beautiful nature-filled setting above the old railway. Tim is always a very welcoming and helpful host and has thought of all the little touches like the herb garden and ice blocks that make this place truly special. Our number 1 choice for camping in Sussex, can't recommend it highly enough!
Spent our first wedding anniversary here and absolutely loved it. The site is lovely, the pitches are big and well spread out and the facilities are great. The nearby farm shop sells very good quality produce and other items useful for campers. Tim, the owner was very friendly and keen to ensure our stay was as good as it could be. Everything has been very well thought out to ensure the campers enjoy their stay and come back - and I will be!
Had a great stay here for May bank holiday 2014. The weather was a bit damp, but the place itself is just brilliant as far as we were concerned - quiet, great for kids, and with widely spaced pitches that mean you can really get away from it all. The bird song first thing, and the bats last thing, kept everyone enthralled. And they let you have open fires, which was a bonus. I'd stay here again for sure - 5 stars.
A really lovely site with a fab host. The peace was only broken by the sound of birdsong (cuckoos and woodpeckers amongst them). The walk to Barcombe down the old railway track was beautiful. All amenities were clean and did what it said on the tin. Will be going back. Big thanks to Tim for his hospitality.
My daughter an I had a fantastic weekend staying in the tree house. The camp site was well equipped, very well kept and in a beautiful spot. Tim and the family could not have done more to help and being able to enjoy a camp fire made it a fantastic break for us both.
We stayed at the secret campsite on the last sunny week-end of the year and couldn't have choose better, We went on friends recommendation and we loved it! The campsite is set in secluded , stunning location, surrounded by forest and fields, you only hear the birds singing away, the pitches are very large and far from each other and flat! Carts are provided to carry your stuff so no car near the pitches is again an added bonus, It's A little walk to the facilities (shower block, toilet, wash up area with power points and fridge/freezer) but no problem with that. And best of all, nothing like spending an evening building a big fire! BBQ both nights and our steaks never tasted better!
Tim is very welcoming, friendly and will help any way he can, and makes sure you have a pleasant and enjoyable stay,
So if your looking to get away and spend a couple of days in the wilderness for a bit of quality time to relax, this is the place!
My boyfriend and I stayed for 5 nights in August. A beautiful, peaceful place. Lots of space, secluded pitches, quiet nights. Wonderful to have a fire without having to bring your own firethingy. Loads of room for our big tent. Wildlife absolutely crackers - green woodpecker and at least seven (7) count 'em, seven baby pheasants wandering about 2 meters away in the long grass plus lots more. Gorgeous woods, walks, farm food shops and fabulous pubs nearby. You can also go swimming in the Ouse! Tim runs a fabulous place and is so hospitable and helpful you won't want to leave. Top Notch.
Can't fault anything about this campsite, it is well run, safe, clean and teaming with nature. The children are safe to explore as there are no cars on site and the pitches are huge and well spread out so you feel you have plenty of privacy. There is a great farm shop down the road and you are only a short drive from the coast. Will definitely be going back
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Large, private pitch was great, facilities fine, quiet during evenings/night. Perfect for our 1 year old as no cars are allowed on the campsite and he could wander amongst the wildlife. Enjoyed cooking on campfire each evening. Close to many interesting places to visit, e.g. South Downs, Brighton. Highly recommended.
Brilliant. Tents only. Sites are well-spaced - each is a circle of mown grass with its own fireplace and reached by a mown track. Woodland and grasses are growing around so eventually will be a series of secluded sites. No cars beyond the carpark allowed but Tim the enthusiastic and friendly owner is often on hand to help wheel your gear to your site. The best site we've stayed at and us very family friendly. Nearest pub a 25 min walk down an abandoned railway line to Barcombe Cross.
Stayed in their out-of-this-world Tree Tent (more like a space-age pod) and the adorable, handmade wooden Arkette. Both wonderful in different ways. The site itself has great big plots, secluded from each others by the clever landscaping and tall, uncut meadow. The facilities were all that was needed and the owners are incredibly friendly and helpful. I loved the fact that cars aren't allowed on site. It makes it feel all the more like an escape from it all. Definitely going back next year, and maybe later this. (Weather permitting!)
What a great place. We camped last weekend with friends and had an amazing time. The camping field is stunning: surrounded by trees, large pitches, well spaced apart from each other.
The facilities are very good with hot showers and well built composting loos. There are a number of pubs within a close range and there's a farm shop a couple of minutes walk away which has an amazing butchers.
I can't recommend the Secret Campsite highly enough and will definitely be going back.
Took my daughter and her friend for their first camping experience, and everything worked out just great, so much so that we cannot wait to go back. Tim the owner was incredibly helpful - the pitches are very well spaced out and he likes to keep it that way so campers have an easy experience - we stayed on the Bank which overlooks the main camp building, but didn't notice it as the South Downs in the distance were the main attraction. Only one other tent in this huge field. We looked at the main meadow on the other side of the disused railway which is now a great nature walk and it too had very well spaced pitched. Lots of trolleys available to get the gear from the car to the pitch, solar powered showers gave great hot showers for free. Toilets and all facilities very clean along with good washing up area with lots of useful info and maps for walks. Good supply of great quality wood for just over a fiver - enough for us for a couple of fires. Lots of wildlife and beautiful flora - kids were transfixed by the toads on the way to the loos! Return visit is already being planned, but best to book in advance.
We stayed at this lovely site last week. it is not far from home but felt miles away. The owner Tim is so helpful and friendly. having a place to light a campfire is fantastic. We will be back
My girlfriend and I really liked this campsite. It was her first experience of camping and the owners were really friendly and helpful. You are surrounded by wildlife and it really felt like you were away from it all. The campsite is well kept and it has all the facilities you need. A farm shop is a short walk away for meat and veg. The coast is not to far away either. We only had a weekend and didn't have enough time to explore the area fully so will definitely go back.
We went to the Secret Campsite with several other families late in the season and had the whole place to ourselves! It is absolutely beautiful setting, wonderfully peaceful and incredibly well organised with well spaced pitches, parking nearby, trolleys to carry our gear, and a plentiful supply of logs for the fire. The shower blocks and composting toilets were also excellent, and Tim and Lisa, the owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. We all loved it and can't wait to go back!
We chose The Secret Campsite for out first family camping experience and we'll definitely be going back. Big pitches, great facilities, beautiful location and a very safe environment just what we were looking for.
Had a lovely stay here shortly after the site opened last summer. We have four kids and a family mega-tent, but the pitches are huge and there's lots of space between them, so we fitted in nicely. The facilities are simple but clean and the thunderbox compost loo is surprisingly odour free. Area around campsite is lovely, with the downs and the sea not far away. Owner and his family are very helpful and there's a farmshop 5 mins walk away to buy meat and veg. Will head back this summer to check out some of the places that we didn't make it to last time. Only downside is that we had to leave the dog with a friend.
