As for local activities, you're in for a treat. Top of the list is outdoor pursuits, as Barnard Castle sits on the northeastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. From walking and cycling to pony trekking or fishing at Balderhead and Hury reservoirs, there's so much to do in this glorious part of the world. Barnard Castle itself (known locally as 'Barney') is a magnificent 12th century stronghold perched high over the River Tees, just a short walk from the campsite. The nearby market town of the same name is also a great place to visit, with winding cobbled lanes, pretty cottages and shops.

Teesdale, which falls within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a cracking place to visit with numerous attractions including High Force, England's highest waterfall. Other local must-sees include the Bowes Museum, Bolton Castle, the Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre, and the Dales Countryside Museum.
