Sitting on the bank of the River Wye in the heart of the Peak District, the town of Bakewell is perhaps most famous for its delicious pudding. But there is much more than tasty treats on offer in this beautiful market town. The streets are lined with quaint shops, cafes and pubs and historic Derbyshire stone buildings whisper of the town’s fascinating heritage.
Spend the day enjoying a riverside walk, sampling the finest Bakewell puddings and pay a visit to the Old House Museum to discover more about the town’s 500 years of history.
The nearby village of Ashford-in-the-Water is well worth a visit with it’s beautiful cottages and bridges across the Wye, named as the best spot in the country for a game of Poohsticks.
Bakewell serves as the administrative centre of the Peak District National Park and is the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding area. The Peak District offers an endless list of activities, for families, thrill seekers and everyone in between. Popular pursuits include climbing, cycling, horse riding, canoeing and sailing but the list goes on, with plenty of activity centres offering experiences with trained instructors and equipment hire.
For an excellent family friendly bike ride, take a trip along the Monsal trail, a traffic free route which runs along an old railway line taking in superb views of the countryside and the River Wye.
Of course, one of the most popular activities in the Peak District is walking and in such a stunning setting, it doesn’t matter which direction you choose, you are guaranteed spectacular views. There are routes of all lengths and levels to suit all parties, along rivers, through woodlands and around the surrounding hills. Regardless of the distance, all who step out for a ramble will be rewarded with stunning local flora and fauna as well as a tearoom or countryside pub in which to rest their legs.
