It's an unfortunate reality that the UK gets more than its fair share of rain... as such, proper wet weather gear is really important, especially if you're camping. There are few things worse in this world than climbing into a tent soaking wet, lying in a wet sleeping bag and then being dripped on!

The product on review will at least help prevent the first part of that situation! We've taken a look at the Trespass Packaway waterproof jacket from the kind folks at Outdoor Look.
First impressions are that it's a light jacket... kind of like a shell jacket, but perhaps not quite as thick. As such, it's ideal for summer rain - if you were to use it in the winter, then it'd be most effective with a fleece (or similar) underneath. Cunningly, it can be packed away into its own pocket... when packed down in this manner, the whole thing is only 25x15cm in size, so it would be easy to stow in a car boot or camping box for rainy occasions.

The jacket is very comfortable to wear - there are breathability zips under the arms and a zippable pocket on either side. The one thing we felt was potentially missing was a 'security' pocket (i.e. one that has an extra layer of waterproofing) on the inside of the jacket. The hood can be folded away and has a Velcro adjustment strap so that you can change how far the peak extends over your face.

The specifications say the jacket has a waterproof rating of 2,000mm and certainly in our field tests we were kept warm and dry in a rather determined downpour! Using the jacket while cycling is generally a good test of how breathable a garment is and the Trespass jacket did well in that test too. It would quite possibly be a very different story in winter with extra layers taken into account, but by itself the jacket has perfectly good breathability.

All in all, this is a good waterproof jacket at a very good price. Not one to take with you to Kilimanjaro, but for braving summer showers and at the price it's a bargain!

The jacket is available from Outdoor Look for only £34.49, which we think is a bargain! Click here to view the jacket.
