If you dream of getting away from it all, sleeping under the stars and cooking on a campfire, but are unsure how to go about it, then the aptly named "The Camping Book" is just for you. A comprehensive guide to camping, it covers everything from selecting and packing the right equipment, choosing and setting up a campsite and recipes/kitchen tips for preparing the perfect campground meal.

The first section of the book deals with choosing a campsite. It lists the pros and cons of various types of camping, including car camping, wild camping, festival camping and the increasingly popular 'glamping' (glamorous camping in pre-rigged tents/tipis/yurts). It also lists several tips to think about before setting off, such as 'will we fit everything in the car?'!

The second section deals with equipment and gear. What tent to take, what to sleep on and in, what to cook on and other essential bits of kit are all covered in superb detail. Readers are even given some advice on how to pack- while this is mostly common sense, there are a few gems such as packing your tent near the top when loading up your car. Not an immediately obvious thing to do when packing, but very useful when setting up camp!

Sections three and four have plenty of instruction in setting up camp and maintaining it for the duration of your stay. Again, many useful tips and hints are included, along with our personal favourite... the three day rule. This states that if you've had nothing but rain for three days of camping, you qualify for a hotel room! On a more serous note, this section gives excellent advice on creating a campfire, keeping bugs away and reading the weather.

The book is well rounded off by the camp cooking section. While not as comprehensive as a dedicated camping cookbook, there are several delicious looking recipes designed to be easy to prepare while camping.

Overall, "The Camping Book" is an excellent resource for campers, especially those new to this most excellent way of holidaying. However, even experienced campers will find some gems in this book, so it's certainly not just for 'beginners'. The book is available from all good bookstores and online from Amazon for only £7.79.
