When planning a camping weekend, meals are often rather low down on the camper's list of priorities. If dinner doesn't consist of a meal at the nearby pub, then it more often than not entails a loosely planned meal cooked on a disposable barbecue.

In this excellent book from Amy-Jane Beer and Roy Halpin, the authors show campers, hikers, backpackers, paddlers and anyone fond of the great outdoors another way!

The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the practicalities of setting up a camp kitchen and ensuring campers have all the correct equipment to hand. It takes up just over half the content of the book and is the most comprehensive guide available for preparing, cooking and cleaning food while camping. It covers such diverse topics as nutrition, choosing a camping stove, obtaining clean water and where/when to find various wild foodstuffs throughout the UK.

The second part of the book consists of camping-friendly recipes for everything from delicious 'scrambled eggs in a bag' to spicy sausage couscous and a (not at all calorie free!) mars-bar fondue. Most of the meals are created from only a few ingredients and in many cases much of the preparation could be done before leaving home. The recipes in the book also represent a good range of meals that are suitable for lightweight backpacking or large camping groups where a substantial camp-kitchen is available.

The book is A5 in size, so is easily thrown in a backpack or camping kit for use in the field. The recommended retail price is £14.95, but it is available from Amazon for £13.49.
