Dealing with pests when camping

Bugs, insects, creepy crawlies, rats and worse will encroach on your camping area drawn in by food, waste, warmth and light if you’re not careful. Here are a few tips to avoid pests becoming pests on your holiday!

- Keep campsite clear of rubbish and waste
- Regularly wash up and put dishes away
- Store food in airtight containers and try to keep it above ground level, for example in a car or stacked in boxes. Anything in cardboard or foil packaging should be transferred into tupperware containers.
- Use bug spray or insect repelling candles (Citronella Candles)
- Avoid putting your tent near stagnant water (lakes, rivers). This is the home to many biting insects and mosquitoes however idyllic the location may seem.
- Cover up and wear long loose clothing, particularly around dawn and dusk which is when mosquitoes are most active.
- In the summer time if you have a lot of wasps in your campsite cut an old plastic bottle in half and attach some wire or string to hang it from. Fill it with a sticky concoction of squash, syrup, juice or whatever you have to hand. Hang it somewhere near your campsite to catch and trap unwanted stingers.
