Alan Rogers Britain & Ireland Camping Guide

One of the first things you think when you pick up the Alan Rogers Britain & Ireland guide is "Wow, this is rather heavier than it looks!" And considering that the guide packs in over 350 pages of campsite details and reviews into a handy size book (slightly bigger than A5), it's remarkable that it's not twice as heavy!
The guides cover most of the UK and Western Europe through 5 different editions and we were sent the Britain & Ireland guide to review. This guide is divided into the main regions of the UK & Ireland, making it easy to find a campsite in any particular area. In each regional section the campsites are further grouped by towns arranged in alphabetical order. Although a seemingly insignificant detail, the fact that it's easy to find a campsite in any particular town anywhere in the UK is something that is bizarrely often overlooked in other guides! Additionally there is a very useful index of towns in the back of the guide.
At the start of each regional section there is a map showing larger towns and cities, which could be useful when planning a longer trip or when looking for a campsite near to a particular location.
Each campsite listing has enough detail to give a good overview of the site, giving a brief description of the facilities and the surrounding area, as well as details of the opening season, pricing indications and directions to the campsite. Overall it's ample detail on which to decide to visit or not and the contact details of the campsite are also included in case you need to ask any other questions or check availability.
There is some advertising in the guide, which was slightly unexpected. However, it is tastefully done and doesn't hamper the use of the guide. Indeed some of the adverts had some rather good deals on offer! If the advertising can ensure the price of the guide is lower than it would otherwise be, then we're of the opinion that it's a good thing, especially as people should expect to renew these guides every couple of years as existing campsites close down and new campsites spring up.
And that brings up an inherent flaw in all printed campsite guides- they will go out of date. However, given that they don't rely on mobile phone coverage or internet access, they are still an invaluable tool to regular campers and caravanners, especially when travelling in Europe as mobile phone coverage and internet access can be both patchy in rural areas and exorbitantly expensive.
All in all, if you're looking for a portable guide to campsites anywhere in the UK and Western Europe then the Alan Rogers guides are highly recommended. We're sure that they will be well-thumbed and heavily used no matter whether you're looking for a delightful Devonshire weekend retreat or further afield to a month long road trip around Europe.
