Things to do in Dorset
The only county in England still motorway-free, Dorset is well known for its rustic atmosphere, unspoilt beaches, and historic
Jurassic Coast. Whether you want to see film and TV locations for real at
Lyme Regis or head for the bright lights and golden beaches of
Bournemouth, this county has so much to offer.
There is a long-standing tradition of supporting wildlife in the area. A trip to
Abbotsbury Swannery allows you to walk through a nesting colony of Mute Swans: the only chance to do so in the world. Nearby
Monkey World offers rescued chimpanzees a chance at a new life in Dorset woodland: each primate has their own unique character. If the mysteries of the Deep appeal, then
Weymouth Sea Life Park is a great day out for all the family.
As a county, Dorset has inspired hundreds of authors, from Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen to children's favourite Enid Blyton.
Corfe Castle, in the picture-postcard pretty village of Corfe, is widely thought to have been the basis for Kirren Castle in the Famous Five books. One of the best ways to see the gorgeous countryside is to take a trip on the
Swanage steam railway, or check out the
model village, also in Corfe, for a glimpse into how things may have looked before the English Civil War.
If you like your days out a little more prehistoric, then head to the
Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester, take a picnic to the Nine Stones Barrow or brave the climb to
Maiden Castle, the largest and best preserved Iron Age hill fort in England. For a little more action visit the excellent
Tank Museum at Bovington, or take a swing on the ropes at
Go Ape in the New Forest.
Dorset is also famous for its fantastic food. Indulge in a cream tea, munch on a slab of Dorset Apple Cake, or opt for the healthier choice with freshly caught fish. If you fancy a tipple, the county produces some of the best Sloe Gin and Cider in the country.
Lyme Bay winery has a fabulous range of unusual wines and liqueurs, from Whisky Ginger and Elderberry Port to Damson Reserve Liqueur and Westcountry Mead.
Whatever you're looking for, peace, action, history, tranquil countryside or golden beaches, you'll find it in the county of Dorset.
