Out in the Open in Cornwall

'Out in the Open' (a gay & lesbian farm campsite), evolved almost by accident. We, (like a lot of farms in Cornwall), set up a campsite for the solar eclipse in 1999 & after this, we decided to remain open purely as a gay campsite. Back then, it was difficult & sometimes uncomfortable, to be yourself in public & for some people, it still is. As far as we know, this has, historically, been the only gay-owned campsite in the UK, exclusively for lesbians & gay men. However, the passing of the Equality Act in 2006, meant that this had to change. We very much aim though, to continue to provide a safe & welcoming environment for gay people just as we always have in the past.

This was never intended to be your average commercial campsite; it never has been & never will be! We do not depend on its income or cram as many people in as possible. We see it more as a friendly community. There are just two of us, (one of whom also works full-time). We have no staff, cleaners, gardeners or wardens. So we limit numbers & rely on the co-operation of our campers to keep the campsite happy, friendly & manageable. This includes respect for us, our home, other campers & the environment. We cannot meet the needs of everybody. This site is not a nightclub or a place for late-night parties, but it does aim to offer a friendly, safe, environment in which to camp, socialise & have fun, within some clear boundaries.

We are situated just 10 minutes walk from the village of Porkellis, between the towns of Falmouth & Helston in Cornwall. The farm is at the end of a track, away from roads & is both peaceful & private. We are in a central position for access to the north & south coast beaches & major tourist attractions. Please be aware that, due to a narrow access lane, we can only cater for tents & small campervans - anything larger than 7' wide will not get down the track!
