Things to do in Kent
Spectacular beaches, historic castles and an amazing maritime heritage make Kent the perfect camping destination for families looking for an action-packed holiday or if you just want to relax and unwind.
Camber Sands, near Rye, is a two-and-a-half mile stretch of golden beach ideal for cricket, frisbees, horse riding, and sunbathing. Kids will love making sandcastles whilst you take it easy. Afterwards, why not indulge in some afternoon tea at one of Rye's many tea rooms?
The county is renowned for its food and drink. Try some of the local ales, seafood and homemade cakes. The Chapel Down Winery in Tenterden offers some of the best English wine for you to sample. Or why not tour Biddenden Vineyards and try some sparkling rose?
Kent offers wildlife lovers lots of opportunities to observe birds and animals. Pegwell Bay is perfect to watch waders, while the many wildlife parks in the county are perfect for watching deer and wild birds.
Kent is bristling with history. Visit one of the many castles in the county and watch jousting, try medieval food and see what life was like as a peasant. Take a tour of Canterbury Cathedral and walk along the famous Pilgrim's Path.
If you want something more ancient, take a trip to one of the county's Roman villas. Lullingstone Villa, in Eynsford, will let you glimpse life in Roman Britain. Kids will love dressing up as Romans while you try some of the refreshing drinks on offer in the cafe.
If you are interested in exploring Kent's fascinating maritime history, visit The Historic Dockyard at Chatham, which was recently named 'Best Large Attraction in the South East'. The cinque ports on the South Coast are rich with history and you can easily find fossils, too, along the cliffs.
Kids will love the many attractions Kent has to offer. From Dickens World to the Rupert Bear Museum, there is something they will enjoy. Or they could just ride their bikes along the scenic Kentish countryside, run through beautiful forests and fish by the sea. You can also take a train and watch the sun set over the Downs.
For something a little more unusual, take the Canterbury Ghost Tour and learn more about the city's most haunted spots. If action's more your thing, speed round Buckmore Park's circuit in a go-kart.
If you want something more sedate, stroll round one of Kent's fine country houses or perhaps enjoy a soothing massage at a spa. Let the kids go ape at one of the many wildlife parks or crazy at a family farm while you sink into a good book.
Kent has inspired authors from Charles Dickens, Edith Nesbit, Ian Fleming, Charles Darwin and Christopher Marlowe. Darwin lived in Down House, Downe, for 40 years and is where he wrote 'On the Origin of Species'.
