Fraserburgh is the second largest town in Aberdeenshire, behind Peterhead. The town developed from its foundation in the 16th century to become the largest and one of the most fishing dependent settlements on Banff and Buchanâ??s northern coast. 44,000 tonnes of fish are now landed at Fraserburgh.
In 1787 the newly formed Lighthouse Board leased the tower on Kinnaird Head from the Fraser family and converted it into the Kinnaird Head light. This remained in use as a manned lighthouse until 1992, when it was passed by the Northern Lighthouse Board to Historic Scotland. It has since formed a part of the attractive Scottish lighthouse museum, housed in purpose-built premises at Kinnaird Head. It is well signposted from the centre of Fraserburgh, when you have visited the museum, the nearby Fraserburgh Heritage Centre, showcasing everything from the age of sail to the haute couture of designer Bill Gibb is also well worth a look.
Situated overlooking the esplanade and on the large beach (which is included in the marine conservation society's good beach guide) of golden sands that stretch round the bay to the Waters of Philorth and its Nature Reserve.
To the west side are industrial properties and fish processing factories.
